Updated: Jul 6

Overview of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC)

The China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) is a key initiative under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), aimed at enhancing connectivity between China and Myanmar. The corridor's primary objectives include improving trade routes, facilitating infrastructure development, and boosting economic integration. CMEC spans from China’s Yunnan province through Myanmar to the Bay of Bengal, comprising various infrastructural projects such as railways, highways, and deep-sea ports (The Diplomat, 2024; Wilson Center, 2024).

Key Projects and Progress

Kyaukphyu Deep-Sea Port: This project is central to CMEC, providing China with strategic access to the Indian Ocean. The port project, led by China’s CITIC Group, includes an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to address concerns from local communities about environmental degradation. Despite initial progress, the project faces challenges, including local resistance and the unstable political environment (The Diplomat, 2024; Wilson Center, 2024).
